1997-2003

On my first journey in 1976 to Naples I was amazed by the urban chaos along the elevated highway – with Vesuvio throning majestically above everything. Into my mind came the woodcarvings of Hiroshige and Hokusai, who integrated Mount Fuji in every image of their famous series devoted to the holy mountain.  I took the first photograph of this series in 1997, the Sphinx at the Villa Axel Munthe on Capri, observing the Vesuv, there hardly visible in the distance.  The project led me several times to Naples and seems still incomplete. All photographs of this series are made with larger format from tripod, also the photographs with people – none were arranged.
