1993

This sequence was shot in Milano. I was just examining the white spots on squares of dark metal-cladding for my wall-series, when a young woman came along with a big piece of white board in her hands. Immediately I tried to focus my all-manual rangefinder-camera on the woman approaching. This contact sheet ends with a white dot – the last image on the roll.          Photographing walls or buildings is also street photography, though in the classic sense the focus is on people. The decisive moment : mentally focussed on white spots, I realized the chance for the unpredicted, not even knowing if it would work; which is for me the essence of street-photography, and makes more fun with non-automatic cameras.
